Your business in a month
How it is calculated
Each sale leaves contribution margin: price minus variable cost. That margin pays off the fixed costs.
Break-even point = fixed costs ÷ margin. Example: $1,200 of fixed costs, price $8 and cost $3.50: each sale leaves $4.50, so you need 267 sales per month ($2,133).
Frequently asked questions
What is the break-even point?
It's the sales level at which you neither win nor lose: what comes in is just enough to pay all the costs.
What are fixed costs?
Those you pay even if you sell nothing: rent, salaries, utilities, internet, loan payments.
What are variable costs?
Those that increase with each sale: raw materials, packaging, shipping and payment fees.
How do I lower my break-even point?
By raising the price, lowering the cost of each unit or reducing fixed costs. Try the changes in the calculator.
Do I include my own salary?
Yes: if you work in your business, include it in fixed costs to know if it is really profitable.
